A 21st Century Nutcracker

Join The Center Dance Studio onstage this December for an exciting spin on a wintertime classic! It’s A 21st Century Nutcracker – dance styles from across the globe (and right next door!) set to Tchaikovsky’s timeless score.

Auditions are open to the public and will be held at The Center Dance Studio on Sunday, October 4th at the following times:

  • 1:30-2:30 PM: Grades K-1
  • 2:30-3:30 PM: Grades 2-3
  • 3:30-4:30 PM: Grades 4-6
  • 4:30-5:30 PM: Grades 7-12

All who audition will receive a role!

Performance Dates: Saturday, December 19th (7PM) Sunday, December 20th (10AM, 1PM & 5PM)
Performance Location: Bowker Auditorium (UMass)
** Dancers may be cast in one, some or all shows. **

Children ages 3-5 are eligible for the role of Sled Dog. This is a simple role which does not require an audition, and entails only one studio rehearsal; if your child is interested in participating in the show as a Sled Dog, please add your name to THIS google doc. A Sled Dog Meet-and-Greet will be held in early December.

Rehearsal Information:

  • Weekly rehearsals will be held primarily on Sundays at The Center Dance Studio between 1-6 PM, from October 18th-December 13th. Specific rehearsal times within the Sunday 1-6PM block will be indicated in the Cast Letter, which dancers will receive via email by Wednesday, 10/14. Sunday rehearsals range in length between 45 minutes (younger dancers) and 2 hours (Party Scene). Exceptions include:
    • Certain scenes for middle/high school students will rehearse on Saturdays between 2-6PM, from October 17th-December 12th; specific times will be included on the audition registration form.
    • The Chinese Zodiac scene (grades K-1), which will rehearse Sundays from 10-11:15 AM, from November 15th-December 13th (this role will rehearse in 2 groups, each for 30 minutes).

Rehearsals will NOT be held the weekend of Thanksgiving (November 28th & 29th).

Dress Rehearsal will be held on Saturday, December 19th at the Bowker Auditorium. A schedule for the day will be announced closer to the performance date. It is imperative that all dancers attend this rehearsal.

PARTICIPATION FEE: There is an $85 participation fee for each dancer in this production ($50 for Zodiac Animals, $25 for Sled Dogs; fee is waived for adults). This fee covers the cost of paying instructors for rehearsal time, purchasing/maintaining costumes, and additional administrative expenses associated with bringing this production to the stage! A link for payment will be included in the electronic Cast Letter. If you prefer to pay via check/cash, please send payment by mail or submit in person by Sunday, October 18th. Checks may be made out to The Center Dance Studio. If this fee is a financial stretch for your family, please feel welcome to contribute whatever amount feels manageable.
