Alexander Technique with Kate Martel

Find your power through gentle, mindful movement.

Balance and Ease on the Floor with Kate Martel
Experience movement with ease while applying the principles of the Alexander Technique. This extended session on the floor invites students to practice gentle movement through the lens of the AT, focusing on breath, dynamic balance and optimal coordination through the whole mind body. Movement structures and patterns are drawn from such practices as Bartenieff Fundamentals, Yoga, and various Dance Techniques.

Alexander Technique can be beneficial if you are:

  • Seeking more ease and less stress in everyday movement
  • Experiencing chronic pain or discomfort such as headaches, backaches, tendonitis, strained muscles, joint deterioration, difficulty breathing
  • Recovering from an injury or trauma
  • Interested in gaining more energy and stamina in everyday functioning
  • A performing artist or athlete and wish to refine technique and recover faster
  • Seeking a greater sense of yourself in relationship to your environment overall
  • Desiring more confidence in public speaking or teaching

FEE: $50 (4 week session) or $15/drop-in.
WHO: Performers, Sitters, Walkers, Teachers, Caregivers, Workers, or any Body who wants to move with awareness. All are welcome.

Flamenco Workshops at The Center

The Center Dance is thrilled to host master flamenco teacher Lindsey Bourassa for two workshops on Wednesday, February 21st.

Lindsey comes to us from Portland, Maine’s Bourassa Dance Studio, where she directs, teaches, choreographs and performs.  Read more about her work here.

Workshop Description:
In this workshop we will learn the foundations of flamenco technique, including footwork, marking steps, and rhythms, as well as a fun choreography in the flamenco styles of Tangos. Throughout the workshop, we will also explore elements of flamenco‘s rich history, styles, culture, and language. 

Workshop I (children ages 7-12): 10AM-12:30 PM. Tuition is $45
Workshop II (teens and adults): 5-8PM. Tuition is $60

Book & Bar(re) @ The Center

We take our Wednesday nights with a twist.

Book and Bar(re)™: a combination of book club, dance party and cocktail hour. A short but robust dance warm up followed by light stretching, adult beverages and low-stakes literary discussion. Each class culminates in a group improv inspired by the evening’s literary analysis. BYOBook, BYOBottle…We’ll provide the Barre. Hilarity guaranteed.

Wednesdays, 7:30PM @ The Center Dance Studio. January 24th – March 7th (class will not meet 2/21)
Tuition: $75-$100 (sliding scale)

Garden of Verses (ages 1.5-3) offers a gentle, joyful introduction to creative movement for toddlers and their caregivers. Using imagery, rhyme and song, little ones are guided through simple yet foundational movement patterns that promote kinesthetic awareness, coordination and focus. Storybook pages spring to life as children reimagine timeless classics and embody beloved characters; props, instruments and costumes enhance the magic. How hungry is your little caterpillar? Learn the ABC’s of Hip Hop!

Family Hip Hop (45 minutes, ages 4-7) Learn the ABC’s of hip hop! It’s a Saturday morning dance party for the whole family. Instructor Tiffany Joseph gets kids hoppin’ in a way that’s hip. Caregivers may watch from the sidelines, or join in on the dance floor! Saturdays at 11:15 AM. Session I starts 1/13. Tuition is $110 per child (10% sibling discount available).
